Sustainability goals and activities of Prysmian Group Baltics
We are committed to ensuring the sustainability of our processes and to safeguarding the environment. Starting this year, Prysmian Group Baltics coordinates its regional sustainability-supporting activities based on the group's sustainability strategy.
To ensure sustainability, the first and most important goal is to make electricity production clean. Together with our partners, we are committed to modernising energy transmission and distribution and telecommunication infrastructures. At the same time, the sustainability of each organisation and therefore our strategic view is more extensive.
Prysmian Group implements its sustainability strategy through annual goals that are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The goals are clear and measurable, and the company's progress is benchmarked against them annually to ensure continuous improvement. The performance indicators are included in the sustainability report published annually.
The sustainability goals and activities of the Baltics are based on the group's sustainability scorecard.
- Percentage of product families covered by carbon footprint measurement (1), percentage of cables assessed using Ecolabel criteria developed internally (9) – the carbon footprint of the Keila plant products is known, we are implementing a methodology based on Ecolabel criteria.
- Percentage reduction in energy consumption (4) – in recent years we have reduced energy consumption.
- Percentage of plants certified ISO 14001 (5) – the Keila plant has three ISO certificates, including ISO 14001.
- Percentage of waste recycled (6) – in recent years, we have been able to increase waste recycling.
- Percentage of drums (tonnes) reused during the year (7) – we track the percentage of reuse of drums sold to third parties in the Baltics, which has been over 50% and increasing.
- Average hours of training per employee each year (12) – the volume of training hours has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the goal is to develop all employees comprehensively and increase the number of training hours.
- Percentage of women executives (13) and percentage of white-collar women with permanent contracts (14) – the aim is to have a diverse staff and to maintain or increase the proportion of women.
- Occupational accident frequency index (16) and severity index (17) – occupational safety is a challenge at the Keila plant.
- The methodology and results of the reduction percentage of greenhouse gas emissions (3) are being confirmed. Four performance indicators are calculated at group level: percentage of annual revenues from low carbon-enabling products (2), number of sustainability audits carried out based on risks in the supply chain (8), employee engagement index (10) and leadership impact index (11).
The performance indicators of the last years have been aggregated on the Baltic sustainability scorecard.
For this year, out of 16 indicators, we selected 4 target areas to look for opportunities and implement improvements: the percentage of waste recycled, percentage of drums reused during the year, the frequency and severity index of occupational accidents. Improvements in these targeted areas would be very effective. For example, the drum return rate is high, but when we, together with our partners, reduce the gap between return and recycling, we need to buy fewer new drums and reduce the use of various resources. Critical waste management and worker safety are also in focus.
In addition to the scorecard indicators, we also engage in other CO2-reducing and sustainability-enhancing practices – the plant runs on green energy, the coil packaging is 30% recycled plastic, we promote greener options through CableApp, we employ female operators to improve the gender balance in the plant, etc. For us, sustainability means commitment, thus, sustainability indicators form part of the performance indicators of all employees in one way or another.
Through our sustainability goals and actions, we are committed to creating a better future for ourselves, our partners, our customers and our community.
At the beginning of 2023, we will publish a scorecard with performance indicators for 2022 and focus areas for 2023.
